Emergence
Artist Statement The title of this show, "Emergence," draws from a basic concept that complex patterns may arise out of multiple and relatively simple interactions. I view my non-representational paintings as active interactions among form, texture, color, and the viewer's imagination. I use color to explore feelings such as joy, anger, and peacefulness. I use form and texture to provide complexity and depth to the work, often moving along a continuum from geometric to organic forms without seeing a dichotomy. Paul Valery claims "A poem is never finished -- only abandoned." Likewise I find it difficult to say a painting is completed. The unfinished look reminds me there is always more to be done, whether painting a canvas, conducting my professional work as an educator, or loving and being loved by my family.

AwakeThe title of this show, “Awake,” draws from the simple concept
that the full human experience requires being awake and open to possibilities. Awakeness advances to actively seeking and creating what we want and need. I view my non-representational paintings as active interactions among form, texture, color and the viewer’s imagination. |

Being Home"Art is an exploration of emotion. I use color to explore feelings such as joy, sadness, peacefulness, anger, and exhilaration. I'm particularly drawn to juxtaposing orange and blue, which to me signal energy and serenity." March 5, 2009 art show at Black Creek Arts Council in Hartsville, SC. |
